Director's profile - Vittus Bernlow

I was born on a little town, Upernavik, in Nord-Vest Greenland in 1970. When I as 3 years old, my parents decided to return to Denmark, but after I have travelled again to Greenland for many times. At the age of 17 I started my agricultural education at Borris Landbrugsskole-Denmark and after a year of practice at a farm in Skarrild-Denmark, I searched for a job in Iceland. I was employed as a production leader on a little farm with 50 saws at the outskirts of the capital, Reykjavik. After I finished my practice here, I got a new job in Norway on a bigger pig farm where I remained for 2 years. Afterwards i studied Modul 2 at the same Danish agricultural school, Borris Landbrugsskole, and after finishing my education, I was contacted by my earlier employer from Iceland. He wanted me to be the leader of a new pig farm. I said yes and thanks for the offer and started immediately with the building project of Icelands biggest farm, which today has place for 1300 saws and its own slaughter house. At that time I was 23 years old.
In 1998 I started as a teacher at Borris Landbrugsskole and a short period after my employment, I started to teach Romanian agricultural trainees/students. The first group I had was made of 5 Romanian students and I should teach them about pig production. It was a challenge as the teaching methods from Denmark and Romania were very different. In Romania the students should listen to the teacher without asking too many questions, while here in Denmark we like to have dialogues with the students.
Can it be something positive to educate and to have foreign students in Denmark like trainees?

My first foreign sudents have really good jobs today in Europe and many are on their good start in their life. Many of the students say themselves, after many years spent in Denmark, that they see their own countries "with other eyes" when they return home. One can obviuosly come to the conclusion that the foreign students can learn a lot from what we offer on the practical places and the schools in Denmark.

During my teaching experience of the East European students, in 2003 I was also one of the promotores and since that time the leader of the Vocational School Vestjylland, which educates Danish young people with special needs.

Between 2007-2009 I was vice principal at Borris Landbrugsskole and then, from August 2009 I was employeed at Agroskolen as educational leader.

Agri Nord Press Release- Aalborg 30. juni 2011

Agri Nord offers now recruitment and Human Resources (HR) consulting services

Within Agri Nord we can offer now to our clients consultancy services for recruitment of qualified labour force to all the Danish agricultural sector, and in the same time we can offer services and advice within the Human Resources area. The concept covers and includes:
- employment matters, salary, training courses and advice concerning staff leadership, - job meetings and discussions and job interviews
- consultancy concerning employment of foreign workers, including recruitment, special rules, Danish language courses, translations and advice on cultural differences.
The consultancy is offered for both Danish and foreign employees and the subjects will be treated by our department which has 5-6 employees.
The administrative director Erik Lydiksen says: ”We have hired Vittus Bernlow as a team leader for ”Recruitment and HR consultancy" department from 1st July” and we are looking forward to our collaboration. Vittus' skills fit very well in that palette of advisory offers which we, Agri Nord, would like to offer to our clients. Our clients have showed interest for consultancy in the personnel area, which means, that now we establish a competence center within recruitment and HR. In the new team there are gathered all the tasks and consultancy services which we have already offered and in the future the team will develop the concept in relationship to the wishes and the needs which our clients show.
Vittus Bernlow has many years of experience in recruitment of foreign workers and he has worked with Romanian agricultural students over 14 years, partly from Borris Landbrugsskole. Therefore Vittus Bernlow has a good connection to Romanian leaders and trainees who would like to come to work in Denmark.
"We try our best to match the profile of the candidates with the farmers wishes. In this way we are more confident that there will be a good match for all the parts" says Vittus Bernlow. He underlines that, it is better if a farmer makes a request in a good time, as the probability for all the parts to go well has a bigger chance.

Understanding and Interaction/Team work

When Vittus Bernlow intermediates foreign working power, the understanding and interaction are on high seats/focus. He has intermediated over 1.000 foreign leaders and trainees in Denmark, primarily from Romania. Most of these Romanians have had a good relationship with the Danish farmers, but sometimes it can run not so good, and this is due to the lack of culture and background knowledge.
" A common problem, is that in East Europe a man dares not to come with suggestions to a person with a higher level than himself. If somebody asks them "Did you understand what you have to do?" so they always answer "yes" in the very start - and thus there happens mistakes very easily. That is why, it is very important, especially in the beginning of an employment or during the training period, to do something with the rules/directions/instructions" says Vittus Bernlow.

A farmer and his employee may both speak very well English, but still understand each other like night and day due to the cultural differences, and Vittus Bernlow can help when there are such big and small problems in the relationship between the employer and the employee.
